It's As Easy As ABCV - The Hunts Post - 18 April 2012 17th July 2012

Simple steps to increase chance of an interview

WITH so many people looking for employment, it is important for jobseekers to increase their chances of securing an interview with a great CV.

Meyer Scott Recruitment's tips for the ideal CV may help you to secure that new position:

  • Treat your CV as work in progress and never send it with out-of-date details. If you have not worked for a while, explain what you have been doing.

  • Employers are more interested in hearing about your recent experience so detail your last post first, and work backwards.

  • When using the multitude of job sites available, keep track of where you have sent your details. Often agencies or potential employers will call you for a brief chat before inviting you for an interview, and it's worrying if you appear unaware that you have even applied.

  • Ensure your communication is effective: avoid job-specific language and jargon.

  • Tailor your details to a specific role. Check the job description against your CV. If this is a struggle, then perhaps the job is not for you.

  • Check you have given the correct contact details on your CV – many people forget to include their mobile number and e-mail address.

  • Agencies and employers need more than just job titles, as the duties of a secretary or sales administrator with one company differs vastly from others,
so a full job description will assist employers in their selection process.

  • Don't get too hung up on the length of your CV. Often candidates tell Meyer Scott they have been told to keep it within two pages – if a CV is well written and completely relevant, potential employers will eagerly read it all.

  • When you have been out of work for some time, motivation can take a dip. If you're 16 or 60, you must be positive, possess a can-do attitude and be flexible.
